The stay pile:

The sophisticated 70’s look targets more volume while still creating a tailored silhouette. This look can be accomplished with wide legged pants or flare pants coupled with soft tailored blouses that create a billowing look in the arms or shoulders. This also requires a tight cinched belt to complete the look and create the more tailored overall look. Additionally, higher heeled shoes, larger floppy hats, and high waisted pants are part of this new fashion trend influenced by 70’s style.

The biker look is also part of this year’s fashion trends. Although the biker look is not necessarily new, it has increased in popularity and use as individuals begin to look away from the military fashion trend and look to something new.

This look includes interpretations on motorcycle jackets, zipper sleeves, leather pants, and the use of a technique called quilting. These elements give clothing lines a biker feel without focusing completely on a biker style.

Several other fashion trends are also making their way into the spring and summer fashion lineup such as influences from punk fashion, and elements from 60’s fashion trends. However, the predominate fashion styles or themes seem to be the revival of vintage clothing such as elements from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s and a biker fashion reminiscent of recent military fashion trends.

At the 150th Anniversary of Massachusetts Superior Court in November 2009, Lizzie’s mock trial jury acquitted,123-48.  Evidence entered at retrial was identical to the original (circumstantial, with no smoking hatchet). Lizzie got off again.  What did the jury miss?

“Lizzie burned a dress in the kitchen stove, before the arrest. The dress was an example of modern fashion, kind of a smock without pockets. She said she put pears in the dress to eat in the hayloft!  She told Alice Russell that brown paint stains made the dress unwearable.  She tried to buy prussic acid (poison) the day before the murders.  Her inquest and trial statements don’t match,” says Dee Moniz at the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast gift shop.

On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden, Lizzie and Emma Borden’s father and stepmother, were brutally murdered within 1-1/2 hours of each other, at 92 Second Street in Fall River, Massachusetts.  Mrs. Borden died of multiple hatchet head wounds, although the coroner stated “she died of fright.”

Built in 1845, Andrew Borden purchased the home for $10,000. about $200,000 in today’s dollars.  Now 230 Second Street, the Borden home was in a family neighborhood that continued to grow into the 1890s. With an estate valued at $500,000 or $12 million in 2011 dollars, “The house wasn’t t on the fashionable hill,” remarks a local realtor. Borden purchased it “because the house wasn’t on the gas line: no gas lights, electricity, modern plumbing or phone were installed, unlike other fine homes of the day.”

The house changed hands many times since the murders. “After Lizzie was acquitted, she spent the summer in Newport and purchased a fashionable home called Maplethorpe. Lizzie loved modern fashion, colors, patterns and designers. She entertained artists and poets of the day,” a visitor from Gloucester, MA said. “The original house still needs a total fashion makeover. It’s creepy. Lizzie told ax-cellent lies!”

The Director was a catalogue from which the wealthy could order fine furniture.  Mr. Chippendale had a good mind for marketing!  With 161 plates, this was the furniture dreambook on both sides of the pond!  In partnership with James Rannie from Scotland, Chippendale employed between 40-50 artisans.

Chippendale furniture was generally made from solid mahogany (to allow the incredible depth of carving detail known to collectors since the eighteenth century) from the West Indies–Cuban mahogany reveals tiny amounts of contrasting white when worked, and was considered the richest color.

Mahoganies from Honduras (lighter in color), Dominica and Honduras were used, offering the distinctive “plum pudding” streaked and stained appearance. Even then, many cabinetmakers cut costs by using veneers. By deftly combining styles and genres resonating with the period, Chippendale replaced the sharper and angular Queen Anne style forever.

Chippendale furniture is known for the signature Cabriole leg. Extensively borrowing from the Queen Anne-style cabriole leg, there are six versions of the Chippendale leg–ball and claw, lion’s paw, club and spade, club, late Chippendale, and Marlborough.

Preparing to write this article, a polling of online vintage pen sellers provided surprises.  Inquiring of a seller in Greece offering a $100,000 historic Bock fountain pen, he wrote “Sorry, I’m not professionals on pens.”

In general I suggest using a non-abrasive paste cleaner and a cloth. We use Wrights silver cleaner. Use a soft sponge to apply cream and a soft brush (like your child’s dental brush) and warm water.  Dry with a soft cloth, like chamois.”

Each year between January and early March the entertainment industry and Hollywood is awash with diamonds, couture and red carpets. Awards season is a sight to behold for its ravishing style choices, sparkling jewels and jaw dropping faux pas and this year’s 2011 Golden Globes were certainly no exception.

The night’s most notable best dressed actresses included Olivia Wilde in a stunning chocolate brown bejeweled Marchesa dress complete with Tiffany jewelry. Wearing Monique Lhuillier, Catherine Zeta Jones dark green strapless perfectly offset her shoulder grazing Van Cleff and Arnels drop diamond marquis earrings. Another green stunner was Angelina Jolie who shocked many by wearing bright emerald backless Atelier gown.

Other notable stars at the 2011 Golden Globes were Jennifer Lopez who stunned in a white mermaid dress with a see through mini cape. While many questioned the dress no one questioned the exquisite jewelry which included a pair of earrings that were worth 3 million alone.

One of the night’s biggest winners was Natalie Portman who came with a belly concealing and bold pink satin strapless number with a rose detailing the front. But the tour de force of the outfit were Natalie’s accessories, most notably a stunning diamond Tiffany necklace worth an estimated 1 million dollars.

Those who resoundingly were not praised by the critics included Michelle Williams whose chose of an ill-fitting beige daisy printed dress left many scratching their heads. Another worst dressed nominee was stunner was Julianne Moore who completed her bold pink Lanvin look with a 79 carat choker from Bulgari.
